Bridgend County Borough Council and Porthcawl Town Council have announced plans for the refurbishment and repair of the century-old public conveniences located on John Street, Porthcawl. These facilities, which hold a Grade 2 listed status, are set for a significant upgrade to better serve the community while preserving their historical integrity.
The council plans to transfer ownership of these facilities to PTC through a Community Asset Transfer (CAT), provided a comprehensive work plan and cost estimate are developed. This initiative comes in response to community demand, emphasizing the importance of these conveniences remaining operational.
The refurbishment project will address structural issues, including vandalism and anti-social behaviour concerns, potentially through the implementation of CCTV security measures. Key areas of focus will include repairs to the external walls and roof, as well as the toilets for disabled individuals. Given the Grade 2 listed status, the choice of materials, project timing, and overall cost—estimated at approximately £150,000—will be carefully managed to align with conservation requirements.
Businesses across Bridgend are encouraged to express their interest with this project, providing they can meet the requirements. The chosen consultant will be tasked with preparing a detailed repair and refurbishment scheme, complete with cost estimates and tender documents. The consultant will also work closely with BCBC’s Conservation & Design Team to ensure compliance with all Grade 2 listing requirements. Regular progress reports and timely issue resolution will be part of the consultancy services, ensuring the project stays on track.
Businesses interested in submitting a proposal by midday on Thursday 31 July to the official Porthcawl Town Council offices.
