Bridgend County Borough Council is to offer a three-month rent-free holiday for all small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which lease premises from the local authority.

The measure would cover traders in the Bridgend Indoor and Maesteg Outdoor Markets as well as tenants of council-owned industrial starter units.

Council leader Huw David said: “We understand the concerns that businesses have and the sudden shock they are experiencing due to the escalating measures imposed during the outbreak of coronavirus.
“Businesses are going under as we speak, the rent-free holiday aims to offer a lifeline to those who need it – rent is a big part of outgoings for these businesses.

“These are truly exceptional circumstances – we will do our best to help support local businesses through this time. Please follow the advice and guidance issued by the UK Government, Welsh Government and the Federation of Small Businesses.

“We want to reassure residents that, together with our partners, all necessary steps will be taken to support the well-being of our communities as much as possible.”

The council will review the temporary policy in three months’ time.
