Welsh Government launches consultation on new licensing scheme

Wednesday 1 February 2023

The Welsh Government has launched a new consultation on establishing a statutory licensing scheme for all visitor accommodation providers in Wales.

The main aims of the consultation is to help establish a level playing field for all visitor accommodation businesses who currently operate in the sector. The consultation comes after concerns around a lack of playing field for businesses, for certain sectors who do not comply with current statutory obligations.

Details of the proposed licensing scheme for holiday lets include:

  • providing the mechanism to address concerns on compliance
  • providing a comprehensive database of exactly who is operating in the industry as it is currently not possible to determine how many visitor accommodation businesses there are in Wales, or in any given community;
  • a valuable tool in understanding the scale and nature of the sector.

Businesses within this sector are being encouraged to share their thoughts, with the deadline for responses on 17 March 223.
